Budding material scientists enjoy summer camp at SUSTech

Release date:2020-08-11

From August 8 to 10, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) hosted nearly 100 outstanding university students from up to 70 universities across China in a blended, online-offline, summer camp.

The opening ceremony started on August 9, with 44 campers reporting in on August 8. The campers were joined online through online viewers on streaming sites Douyin, Bilibili, and Kuaishou. SUSTech Graduate School Executive Deputy Dean Shuanghua YANG, MSE Head Jiangyu LI, and Deputy Head Baomin XU all attended the opening ceremony.

SUSTech Graduate School Executive Deputy Dean Shuanghua YANG provided a briefing about SUSTech from a variety of aspects. MSE Head Jiangyu LI spoke about the development of MSE, starting from its beginning and looking into the future. MSE Deputy Head Baomin XU introduced the postgraduate training models and the achievements of MSE. Representatives of the 31 MSE research groups spoke about their research directions and outcomes.

Later that day, interviews took place. The 52 campers who were unable to travel to SUSTech due to the impact of the COVID-19 out break participated in online interviews on August 12. Following the interviews, the campers visited the College of Engineering, the Student Dormitories, the MSE Laboratories, Innovation Park, and Wisdom Valley, either through site visits or live streams. The campus tour reflected the energeticacademic environment and robust scientific research atmosphere.

On August 10, the campers visited Guangming Science City, which is the core of the Shenzhen Comprehensive National Science Center. Later that day, the closing ceremony took place.

MSE Deputy head awarded certificates to the volunteers and outstanding campers. They thanked MSE for overcoming a variety of challenges to host a blended camp that provided them unique learning and exchange opportunities. The students hoped to join SUSTech before everyone reviewed the summer camp through a three-minute short film.
