The first metallographic competition of the Department of Material Science and Engineering was successfully accomplished in Conference Room 408 of the Second Scientific Research Building on April 21, 2019. A total of 22 undergraduates from MSE department and other departments participated in the contest. After fierce competition, three students won the special prize, three students first prize, six students second prize and eight students third prize. Then we will choose excellent students to participate in the national metallographic contest to be held in the summer of 2019.
Metallographic analysis is one of the important means of materials research. Different types of materials and different treatment processes produce different microstructure within the materials. Metallographic analysis is to explore the beauty of the microstructures of materials. In order to cultivate students' interest in exploring the microstructure world of materials, improve their practical ability of experiments and the appreciation level of scientific research art, and let more people appreciate the charm of materials, Professor Ye Fei and Mr. Ming Jing initiated and organized the contest, which was successfully held with the help of teaching laboratories and department teachers.
The competition was divided into two parts: written examination and operation test. The final score of the contestants was composed of theoretical examination, quality of prepared metallographic samples, quality of metallographic photographs and operation skills. The contest evaluation committee scored the entries.
Professor Zhang Bi, who is Vice President of the Institute of Technology, visited the site during the contest and gave full recognition and support to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering for organizing the metallographic contest.
After the competition, Professor Yin Lixin from Northeast University, who is the chairman of Metallographic and Microscopic Analysis Branch of Stereology Society and Professor Cheng Xin who is the department head of MSE presented awards to the winners and delivered closing speeches respectively. Professor Cheng Xin said that the holding of the metallographic competition was conducive to the display of the style of the Department of Materials and played a good role in publicizing the Department of MSE. Professor Yin Lixin said that the opening of the metallographic contest is conducive to achieving the goal of promoting learning through competition and further strengthening the mastery of professional knowledge by students and teachers. He also welcomes the holding of a national metallographic competition by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of Southern University of Science and Technology and further expands the popularity of Southern University of Science and Technology.
